Creating for Creativity's Sake
We have a new video up this week! You might notice this week’s video is a little different from previous uploads. For one, I make a cameo appearance (face palm) … I wish Bree would have at least told me to fix my hair!
Jokes aside, I’ve been thinking lately about creating for creativity’s sake. Whenever I took on a freelance project where I had to draw or design something for someone, I never really had much fun. Be it, these were paid projects so having fun isn’t really the point. But I think that personal enjoyment, or expression, is at the heart of creativity. And with that said, it’s important to create sometimes without a specific goal in mind.
Yes, most of the time I write, draw, or make a design, there is a goal in mind. Do we need an updated logo for the press? Do I need to draw something for a project? Do I want this story I’m writing to appeal to readers? Still, though, I have sketchbook upon sketchbook, and notebook upon notebook, full of things that are simply expressions of my own imagination. Might something from one of these meditations make its way into a real project at some point? Yes, that happens too.
Creating without an audience in mind allows freedom of the imagination; it can lead to new answers to old questions. Creating for creativity’s sake is a meditation. The practice can bring peace of mind, and it can also strengthen the creative muscle.
Spend some time in your own journal creating for creativity’s sake. And if you would like to share any of your own creative work, tag us on IG. That said, get into those journals and make something just for yourself—you don’t need to share it online!
