The Archivist: Submission Guidelines Update

We’re happy to have already begun receiving submissions for our new anthology, The Archivist! I think that making this book is going to be a fun journey. However, I embarrassingly forgot to include an important detail in the submission guidelines.

The original guidelines failed to note that the authors/artists who have their work selected for publication, will receive an author copy of the book.

The submission guidelines have been updated. Check out the guidelines HERE. If your work is selected for publication, you will receive one author copy of The Archivist upon publication.

In the meantime, check out the video below for some creative journalling inspiration!

Submission Guidelines Are Up!

We’ve been talking about this for a wile in the newsletter. We will be publishing an anthology called, The Archivist!

We are looking for a variety of submission types, and the guidelines are now posted to our “Submissions” page here on the website.

If you’re interested in seeing your work published, check out the guidelines at the link below.

And if you would like to keep in touch, you can find the sign-up for our newsletter below as well.

We hope to see your work soon - thanks!

Happy New Year! Would You Like a Journalling Prompt?

I typically, but not always, write these blog posts on Sundays. This time, though, it is December 31st, New Year’s Eve, and I wanted to invite any of you who may come across this to join our newsletter for the New Year. The letter goes out tomorrow morning at 9:00AM, and it will include a journalling prompt for setting goals in 2023. As usual, the newsletter will also feature the fantastic artwork from a member of the 1134 Press Facebook community (find A Craft Room of Our Own on Facebook to join the conversation!). An also as usual, we will share some of the exciting things to come in the future.

As I write this, which is quite later in the day than I hoped, the next 1134 Press video is about to be published to YouTube. So, if you happen to be online tonight, be sure to check out the latest upload to the channel. Grab a glass of wine or a cup of coffee (or tea, or water, whatever floats your boat), because tonight’s video is almost 30 minutes long!

Coming in November!

Hello everybody,

This will be another off week for the YouTube channel, but like I wrote in the previous blog post, there is new content on the Buy Me a Coffee page. There are some other reasons besides making content for BMC why YouTube videos have been few this month. I will be writing about that in the next newsletter. It’s all good news, and gets a bit into our lives outside of 1134 Press. If you would like to read more about that, subscribe to the newsletter—linked below!

Also coming in November, new videos for YouTube! We love our YouTube Channel and the community that has grown around it. So, it’s always a bit of a bummer when we can’t post a lot in a month. And with that said, we are excited to get a new series going on the channel next month (and next month is right around the corner). If for some reason you’re reading this blog post, but you’re not subscribed yet to the channel, subscribe today!

FInd a link to our channel below, watch some playlists, and subscribe to catch the new series coming soon!

Coming Up for 1134 Press

Hello everybody,

Bree is currently working on the next post for the Almanac Diary! This will be exclusive to Pen Pal and Book Club Members on Buy Me a Coffee (BMC) and will be a video about her process of getting back into the project. If you’re also getting back into a project, this might be the video for you! She will also reveal the next exercise for the project.

Also, for Buy me a Coffee, Bree is putting together the next Daily Ephemera Podcast. This one will be about her page layout process. This one is available to all member tiers on BMC. See the link below to find all the fun content going up on BMC!

There is a bit of a hiatus on the 1134 Press YouTube channel right now. There is more content on the way, though! Coming in November, you can look forward to a new series on the YouTube channel. This series will dive deeper into page inspiration and journal prompts.

Here are some of the topics planned for the series:

  • How to use white space

  • How to use grids to plan a page

  • How to create hierarchy

  • Layering techniques

We want to thank you all for following along on this creative journey! Find our new series on YouTube in November—we will certainly send a reminder in the next newsletter (also linked below). And in the meantime, check out the new stuff on BMC!

Thanks everybody!

New Content

Hi everybody,

Bree has been posting more content on the Buy Me a Coffee page—a new video just went up! Though much of the content found on BMC is for supporters, there’s plenty you can access for only $1.00. Check it out at the link below!

To be clear, we are still posting videos to YouTube for everyone to enjoy, and we have no intention of stopping. We are just doing a little extra for the BMC audience (which could be you!).

Channel Update

Unfortunately, there isn’t going to be a new video upload today. I have to take some responsibility for this being another skip week. I think I might have offered too many revision notes when Bree shared the script with me earlier this week. With that said, Bree is still working on the next video, and it will go up on YouTube as soon as it’s ready.

As per usual, we have some other things we’re working on in the back ground as well. I plan to write about some of our plans for the channel and 1134 Press in the next newsletter. If you would like some of the details about our plans, go ahead and subscribe to the newsletter. It’s released at the beginning of each month, and the link below.

Until next time everybody!

Next Week: Author Interview at 1134 Press

A new video is coming to the channel next week, and it’s one you won’t want to miss. Bree will be journaling about memories, and in doing so, will be using a very cool book. Bree will be working in some of the pages from, A Life Journaly, written by Sonia Callaway.

Even better, Bree had the opportunity to interview Sonia Callaway. We don’t often feature interviews on the channel, so we’re always excited to when they happen. Tune in next Sunday and hear all about the book and a variety of other topics!

If you aren’t subscribed already, click on the video below then hit the subscribe button. Click the bell to be notified when a new video is uploaded!

In the meantime, check out some playlists on 1134 Press!

A New Milestone and Channel Updates

I’m happy to announce that the 1134 Press YouTube channel has reached 9,000 subscribers! Its awesome that so many of you tune in to our channel for book making, journalling, and paper crating videos. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

Our next video, coming next weekend, will be all about Journal With Me videos. Bree will analyze and see what we can learn from Journal With Me videos. So, tune in next Sunday for that!

Visit the channel and subscribe here!

Even though the video schedule is every two weeks, new content goes up throughout the week on InstaGram and Buy Me a Coffee.

Find quick process videos on InstaGram, here!

The Almanac Diary project is moving to Buy Me a Coffee, where you can also find blog posts, photos, and an array of other things. Check that out here!

You can also join the conversation on Facebook in A Craft of Our Own.

Schedule Update

We’re really excited for a bunch of things we’re working on in 2022 for 1134 Press. Hints have been dropped here and there for some of what we have planned, but it isn’t yet time to reveal anything specific. I will say for now that some of these projects are in collaboration with others, and we’re excited for these collaborations. Above all, we believe that both our collaborative projects and our in-house projects will result in things that you will appreciate. With that said, we must carve out some time to focus on these extra projects.

For the time being, videos will be uploaded to the channel on a biweekly basis. Though we love putting up a new video each Sunday, moving to a biweekly schedule will allow Bree to spend more time on writing, editing, and shooting the regular videos, as well as freeing up the time necessary to make progress on some of our super-secret special projects.

In short, we aren’t going anywhere. The biweekly schedule will be temporary, and we will provide updates regarding these projects and video upload schedules when we have them. For the next little while please look forward to a thoughtfully constructed video every other week, updates here at the blog, your monthly newsletter, and community engagement in the Facebook group. And look forward to some big announcements later this year!

News and Updates from 1134 Press

You might have noticed, depending how frequently you visit this site, that there have been some changes over the past couple days. In a previous blog post I wrote that we were working on a new look. Well, I’m still working on it. We like the cleaner look of the website, but there are still some more changes I would like to make. I’m sure it will be an ongoing project. So, when you come back next, you will likely notice some more differences—big or small.

In other news, today’s video will be coming up later tonight. Sometimes life has an annoying way of interfering with things. In the meantime, though, check out a playlist! Start with the video below. It’s an oldy but a goody! Scrapbooker on a Budget - Eco Friendly Paper Crafts

Trying a Book Kit

A book kit can be a great inroad for the beginning book maker, as well as a fun project for someone who’s been at it awhile. This week, Bree received a book kit from fellow book maker, Former Housewife. Bree had fun putting the project together, and I was impressed by the quality of the finished piece.

The kit comes with everything you need to create your own journal, as well as instructions. Learn more about Former Housewife at the link below, then watch Bree put together and review the kit in the video!

Why I Quit Etsy

Today’s video is something a little bit different. Rather than a Junk Journal with Me video, which usually posts on Sunday, Bryonna discusses her experience running the Etsy shop. The 1134 Press Etsy shop has been on a bit of vacation, and the reasoning behind the extended “vacation” is the focus of the video.

Note, however, that we haven’t actually, fully, 100% quit Etsy. It is very likely that we will have limited quantities of handmade books for purchase through Etsy here and there moving forward. Etsy is definitely a useful platform, depending on how you use it. To hear the story, and get a bit of insight into Etsy selling, watch the video below!

How to Use a Die Cutting Machine

In this week’s Junk Journal with Me video, Bryonna offers a usefully inspiring tutorial. If you are just starting out using your new die cutting machine, this video is for you. Bryonna uses a Tim Holtz and Sizzix Vagabond 2 die cut and embossing machine for this video. You do not need the exact model, though, to apply what you learn in this tutorial to your own junk journal spreads.

Check out the video below!

And don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share—it’s more helpful than you know!

While on Break

We might be taking a break from publishing videos for a couple weeks, but rest assured that we aren’t just sitting on our hands over here. Bryonna is working on new content for the YouTube channel and videos will return the week after next.

Meanwhile, I’m working on a new book of fiction that will be published later this year through 1134 Press. The hard part (the writing) is complete, the editing is also complete, and the process of laying out the book has begun. Also, new comics are still posting through 1134 Comix. Check out the latest one at the link below.

Junk Journal with Me

Two new Junk Journal with Me videos have gone live over the past week. Bryonna also reviewed the We R Memory Keepers Book Binding Guide. Find a brief description of each along with the links below.

In Junk Journal with Me Episode 6, Bryonna writes a letter of her intentions for 2021. The writing is printed onto transparency paper and folded (following the Paper Kawaii Origami Envelope Tutorial). See the video linked below for more creative inspiration!

In Junk Journal with Me Episode 7, Bryonna practices writing with a Trustela calligraphy pen set. She also shares some journaling prompts to help inspire your own journaling. And as usual, Bryonna shares links to the tools noted in the video.

In Reviewing the We R Memory Keepers Book Binding Guide, Bryonna makes a Japanese stab bound sketchbook. She also shows how to make a watercolor sketchbook with leather cover. Watch the video below for the review.

Channel Update

Hello everybody,

Well, we moved house (and the studio spaces). Unfortunately, though, putting everything back together has been much more of a process than expected. The bookmaking space is nearly together, but we were unable to execute a new video for YouTube this week. We expect to be back up and running in time to create something for next week.

The drawing studio is also coming together, but it is still a bit of a disaster area. So, no new webcomics this week either. Depending how it goes, there might be something new for 1134 Comix this coming Sunday. Anyone who has followed that page for any amount of time likely expects long lapses in new content. So, has anything really changed there?

In conclusion, we’re working to get our stuff together. We can’t wait to start putting new content up as soon as possible.

Thanks for your patience!

G.J. Sieck

Moving the Studio and Reflecting on the Journey

Since I started 1134 Comix some years ago, I have had a few studio setups. The studio changes every time I move house (makes sense, since this has always been a home-based situation). Where I sit today is the third workspace from which 1134 content has been produced. From this iteration of the 1134 Studio we created 1134 Press, which has become the flagship of this endeavor. We’ve since published five books as 1134 Press, including two 1134 Comix titles. We’ve created countless handmade books, and most excitingly, began sharing our craft in video form. After years finding its voice, and moving locations, the project I called 1134 is at last becoming itself. And again, a new studio is on the horizon.

All that might be a long way to go just to say we’re moving; but I like to tell a story. In the beginning, this all took place in a dingey basement where I would listen to heavy metal while drawing my often-random cartoons. Then, the studio was crammed into a small room on the third floor of a Baltimore Brownstone; I actually made some of my best work there, though the work did not have very far reach. As I write from this current version of the studio, which consumes a significant portion of our Mount Vernon apartment, I can’t help but reflect on the path to this point. Though each stop along the way on this journey has had value, this stop has been the most valuable so far. With much planned for the future of 1134 Press, we look forward to setting up in the new location and beginning the next chapter.

We’ve started boxing things up in preparation for the big day. Then, once we finally get over to the new place, we will have to go through the process of putting everything back together. With that said, we are going to take two weeks off from publishing the main content. Web-comics and YouTube videos are scheduled to return in the week of November 16th. In the case that this timeline shifts, we will post updates to our various platforms. In the meantime, there will still be some activity from 1134 on the socials and our blog page.
