In this week’s video we continue with the Nature Junk Journal Series. This week, Bryonna shows how to DIY a traveler’s notebook cover for junk journal inserts. The final product looks so cool, and anybody can do it. Bryonna even shares links to were to procure everything one would need to create notebook cover.
Bryonna also shows how to make charms and decorate the cover. The charm making process could be used for any number decorative circumstances, though. The video is worth a watch for this alone (in my humble opinion).

I think our most recent video might be my favorite. Bryonna tries something new this time, and the results are varied. Ultimately, something really cool is produced. Without spoiling anything for the video, I’ll just say it was quite the science experiment.
The video is linked below. Check it out for more paper-crafting inspiration, and learn some fun techniques for eco dyeing paper! Also, the handcrafted receipt dispenser that Bryonna shares at the end of the video is so cool—you have to check it out!
Our video series on making a junk journal continues this week with a new addition. The evolution of this junk journal project brings us to a new and interesting book design. This week, we create another mini booklet to fit inside the junk journal. Only this time, we make faux leather using cardstock. It is a relatively simple process that produces impressive results.
Bryonna also shows even more ways to use ephemera to decorate the journal. Oftentimes, we bind our books by sewing. There are, however, other ways to bind. This week we will bind the booklet using staples.
Check out the video below for some bookmaking, journaling, and papercraft inspiration.
Last week we posted the first part in a series of videos. In the first of the series, we went through how to make a junk journal. This week, we add to it. We like to fill our junk journals with a lot of fun stuff. With that in mind, a great thing to include in your junk journal is a mini-booklet. The options are limitless, but in this week’s video we show you how to create a booklet with a window in the cover (there is also collage involved, so … fun!).
See the video below and follow along with Bree as she creates a mini booklet for the junk journal. Like, follow, and subscribe to catch all of our videos when they come out. Also, feel free to send us a message or leave a comment. We would love to see any suggestions for book projects!
This week, we’ve released the first part in a series of videos all about binding junk journals. In this video, Bryonna teaches how to create a variety of pockets in journal signatures. This is a great way to keep cards, notes, and even mini-journals inside your junk journal.
Also, see how to make a cover for your junk journal using cardboard. Bryonna gives a great tutorial on creating a unique cover that includes a variety of elements. The finished project looks amazing.
We would love to hear from you as we continue making these videos. Please leave any questions, or suggestions for future videos, in the comments. Also, like, subscribe, and share—it helps more than you know!
Sometimes we want to make a very unique and personalized journal, but would like it filled with lined pages rather than reclaimed pages, or scrapbooking pages. Every journal needs to be functional for its purpose. Also, we always try to save anywhere we can in a project. Check out our latest video to see how to do a Cheap Notebook Makeover.
Would you like some inspiration for DIY scrapbooking? How about scrapbooking on a budget? We have a new video up that will give you some great ideas. Check out the video and get some great tips from Bryonna. Be sure to like, subscribe, and share—thanks!
Affirmations are a positive way to change your perspective on yourself, and even the world. As such, Bryonna recently wrote an article all about creating affirmations and keeping an affirmation journal.
Journaling in itself is a great way to practice self-reflection and can be a useful tool in your self-care toolbox. Filling your journal with affirmations can also make for a creative and visually interesting journal.
The more you add, the more beautiful, and helpful, the journal becomes. Your journal is your creation. Your affirmations are personal to you. Never limit yourself in what you add to your journal pages. Fill the pages with what speaks to you personally.
For a detailed overview of how to create your own affirmations and how to keep the affirmation journal, follow the link below. Bryonna’s article is thorough and thoughtful; if you find it helpful, don’t hesitate to click the ‘follow’ button at the top of the article.
1134’s very first handmade book was a mini-comic called The Adventures of Blakbone. I made about ten copies and was stoked to have sold one to a reader all the way in Australia. Was I an international author at that point? Since then, we’ve made numerous handmade books of varying genres.
In recent years, Bryonna has taken our handmade books to a new level of creativity. Unlike the printed and roughly stapled mini-comics and zines of our past, Bryonna’s journals are made with creative intention. Each journal has its own creative spirit.
We thought that the next logical step would be to share the process of journal making with everyone. Learn How to Make a Junk Journal from Old Books in the video below; presented by Bryonna.
We’ve been focusing more and more on journaling, reflective writing, and book making here at 1134 Press. You may have seen Bryonna’s videos on Instagram. In the interest of delivering content to as many people as possible, we’ve started writing for Medium. Bryonna just posted a very well-crafted article that will inspire you to create. In these uncertain times, we partnered with the doula and author Bri “Bam” Mobley to reduce the price of For Us: A Self Care Journal for Mamas. The experience of motherhood is different for everyone and has its own set of challenges during the pandemic. To uphold our promise to promote healthy self-care practices, we needed to make our journals more accessible to mothers during this stressful time.
For Us: A Self Care Journal for Mamas was designed to help moms organize their days and to foster gratitude and self-reflection as part of their daily routine. In addition to the nourishment that we know our journals will bring to your life, Mobley created a list of activities that you can do today to find peace and balance.
1. Write in relaxation into your to-do list even if it’s for 5 minutes.
2. Use writing prompts for self-reflection and gratitude. We already did the hard work of researching the best questions for you. For Us features a curated list of journaling prompts to guide your focus.
3. Go for a walk even if it’s just around the block. Most state parks are still open during the quarantine. Round the kids up and enjoy some forest bathing.
For Us: A Self Care Journal for Mamas is the first collaborative project that we, 1134 Press, have published. Between life’s responsibilities, Bri “Bam” Mobley and I worked diligently for over a year to create a special journal for mothers’ journey in self-care and love.
I am not a mother, but I know so many amazing women that are. Working on this project was a way for me show my gratitude to all those women who have helped shape me into the person that I am today. It takes a lot to raise children and mentor others. Taking time to replenish yourself mentally and spiritually is not just a practice for those who don’t have children, yet, we expect (demand, even) for moms to put their wants and needs last. As Mobley said, “How are you going to pour into your little one if you’re pouring from an empty cup?”
In early discussions about what For Us could be, the conversation always returned to the idea of a room. We wanted this journal to feel like a vibrant room filled with flora and fauna, affirmations, a safe space to question, forgive, and reflect. There are too many aspects in life where women, especially mothers, don’t have autonomy over their spaces, be it internal or external. For Us attempts to achieve just that—a room of your own to be as loud or quiet as you want.
As a person who has kept a journal since I was eight-years-old, I was surprised by the transformation that my personal journaling underwent while working on this project. Yes, For Uswas made for moms, but prompts such as, “Here is the tribe I can call on for help” and “What kind of woman do I want to be in the world,”struck a chord in me. It is our hope that For Us will do the same for you.
It’s been quite a while since our last blog post at 1134 Press. We’ve been pretty busy making books, though. We have some 1134 Comics to mail out, and we have an exciting new project set to release very soon. There will be posts about this coming up! In regard to this new release, I will just tease that there will indeed be a very unique new item in the currently empty “Journals” category of our store.
In other news: We’re super excited about the upcoming conclusion to 1134 Comix’ Pussies of Tomorrow. Look forward to a fifteen page, full comic-size final story arc coming this summer. It’s been a fun comic to write and draw but, all good things must come to an end. On the bright side, after Pussies of Tomorrow finishes a new comic will be starting up that we think you will really like.
That’s enough news for now—see you back here soon!
If you happen to follow our other blog at 1134 Comix, or any of our other social media accounts, you might have heard that we had some comic books in the works. Well, they’re finally available! Catch up with the entire 1134 Comix catalogue collected in The Adventures of Blakbone and Other Stories. The Blakbone story continues in The Outer Space Adventures of Blakbone—both can be found in our store!
